HA NOI — The veteran Vietnamese rock band Buc Tuong (The Wall) will bid farewell to their fans with their last live show tomorrow in Ha Noi.

"The show is not only our way to say goodbye but also to say thank you to our fans, who have supported us so much over the years," said lead singer Tran Lap. "Although we are splitting up, it doesn’t mean we’ve given up our love for rock."

Explaining the band’s break-up, Lap said. "We have followed our love of rock for the past 12 years and now is the right time to concentrate on developing our own careers. Every member of the band has an outside job."

During the show, The Wall expects to perform about 20 of their best-known songs including Duong Den Vinh Quang (Road to Glory), Bong Hong Thuy Tinh (Glass Rose), Mat Den (Black Eyes), Giot Dang (Bitter Drops), and Ngay Hom Qua (Yesterday), most of which were written by Lap.

Calling it The Last Saturday, the band expects the show to attract thousands of fans.

"I promise that The Last Saturday will be an amazing show, not only for all the band members, but also for the audience," Lap said.

Two other bands, Thuy Trieu Do (Red Tide) and Ngon Lua Nho (Small Flame), will open the show, Lap said.

Forming the band in 1995, The Wall’s six members were mostly students from the Ha Noi University of Civil Engineering. The band built a nationwide following with five tours, incluidng The Soul of Stone in 2002, The Wall and Their Friends in 2003, The Song of Red River in 2003, the 2004 national tour, and Rolling Stones in 2005.

The band played at various music festivals at home and abroad, and some their songs were selected as theme songs for Viet Nam Television programmes. The Wall also appeared in an episode of the recent documentary Tomorrow Is Yours and Mine: Viet Nam and the Millennium Development Goals, produced by UN Development Programme.

At The Last Saturday show, 5,000 photos of the band will be sold at prices VND10,000 each, and the funds will be donated to victims of Typhoon Xangsane.

The show begins at 8pm tomorrow night at the open-air stage of the Giang Vo Exhibition Centre in Ha Noi. — VNS
