VietNamNet Bridge - Voluntary activities have actively contributed to helping young people, including students and pupils, become mature and gain more practical experience, according to a conference held in Hanoi on September 19 to review the youth volunteer campaign in 2007.
The campaign was implemented in 8,119 precincts and communes in remote areas with special difficulties. Young volunteers assumed different tasks of boosting socio-economic development in these far-flung areas.
They organized training courses on technology transfer for more than 139,000 people, completed 26,253 construction works and disseminated information about the need to combat social evils and crime, such as prostitution, drug addiction and HIV/AIDS.
Young volunteers also took part in keeping traffic order and reducing the illiteracy rate and providing assistance to students during the time they sat tertiary entrance exams.
Lam Phuong Thanh, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, said that voluntary activities in 2007 mobilized the participation of people from all social strata, including students, intellectuals, workers and the elderly. This year, nearly nine million young local people and 167 foreign students joined the campaign. (Source: CPV) |
