VietNamNet Bridge - Taiwan’s top electronics parts manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision Industry Company, which plans to boost its investment in Viet Nam to US$5 billion, yesterday pledged to give US$5 million to the Ha Noi University of Technology to train skilled technicians for the firm.

Considered among the biggest investments in education to date, this fund is expected to enable the university to supply Hon Hai with 1,200 competent engineers annually.

Raising the expertise of the labor force is not only the responsibility of the Vietnamese Government but also of investors, the company’s representatives told the press.

As planned, two Hon Hai plants in northern Viet Nam’s Bac Giang and Bac Ninh near Ha Noi will start operation to produce consumer electronics, computer components and parts in this first quarter and will need approximately 30,000 staff.

Hon Hai, which has been expanding its production facilities globally, makes iPods for Apple Incorporated, desktop computers as well as components for Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Sony.

Analysts reported that the lower labor costs, geographic location and tax incentives in Viet Nam were the key reasons Hon Hai planned to expand in the country.
